When the demand for new gas turbines dried up in 2017, GE Gas Power’s factory in Greenville, South Carolina, was left holding millions worth of high-tech parts it couldn’t use. The plant turned to the lean manufacturing method and used it to cut overall production time — or lead time — for its HA gas turbine from a year and a half to less than 40 weeks. As a result, inventory levels are down by half, saving the business hundreds of millions of dollars in capital. “It was something I could easily embrace and get my head wrapped around,” says plant leader John Kenney. “The benefits were so easy to see.”
