The American technology manufacturer, Microsoft Corporation, has announced it will invest £3.5bn (US$4.95bn) into Internet of Things (IoT) over a span of four years.

The firm aims to give its customers “the ability to transform its businesses and the world at large, with connected solutions” it stated in a blog post.

Microsoft will focus its investments on research, development, and partner enablement in areas such as securing IoT, development tools, intelligent services, and ecosystems.

The company claims it has been investing in the industry before it “the term was coined” and has invested £1.5bn ($2.12bn) on IoT initiatives.

The firm states that it is well positioned to simplify IoT’s future allowing customers to “create trusted, connected solutions that improve business and customer experiences”.

“IoT is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary effort that spans cloud development, machine learning, AI, security and privacy,” the firm said.

“Whether they’re building products that transform the home, office or factory floor, one thing remains clear: IoT is a collaborative, multidisciplinary effort that spans cloud development, machine learning, AI, security and privacy,” noted Julia White, Corporate Vice-President at Microsoft.
