MINI's electric future & sustainable mobility by BMW

BMW's £600m investment in Mini’s electric car manufacturing in Oxford, fuels growth in British manufacturing, as UK reaches 8th place globally

BMW Group has announced a fresh investment of over £600m (US$751,935,000) at its MINI factories in Oxford and Swindon.

Mini ‘delighted’ with two new electric brands

BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke), is a leader in manufacturing luxury vehicles and motorcycles. The German multinational company is famous for its high-quality craftsmanship, performance and innovative designs. As a prominent manufacturer of motorcycles, BMW produces motorcycles suited for sports, adventure bikes or the road. In recent years, BMW has manufactured outstanding Electric and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles, as part of their sustainability efforts.

The transport industry is often criticised for its contribution to pollution, but the sector is determined not to be left behind as other sectors embrace sustainability.

In 2024, the BMW Group will begin using cast aluminium wheels, produced from 100% green energy. The group hopes to create a clean supply chain, for one of the dirtiest sectors.

By 2030, the Oxford plants’s production volume will be solely electric. The plant will build two new all-electric MINI models, from 2026:

  • The MINI Cooper 3-door
  • The compact crossover MINI Aceman

This will help to secure up to 4,000 jobs at the Oxford manufacturing plant and at the body-pressing facility in Swindon.

"Mini has always been aware of its history - Oxford is, and remains, the heart of the brand,” said Stefanie Wurst, Head of the Mini brand. "I am delighted that the two new, fully electric Mini models are also being produced in Oxford, thereby confirming our path to a fully electric future."

British manufacturing takes 8th spot in the world

The news is especially welcome this week, after reports that the UK has overtaken France to become the eighth biggest manufacturer in the world.

"At a time when people are concerned about what the future is going to be like for the auto industry, what we're saying is that we're doing a lot and it is working," said Kemi Badenoch, Business and Trade Secretary.

This announcement from BMW means total investment into the UK’s automotive sector has reached over £6bn.

"BMW's investment is another shining example of how the UK is the best place to build cars of the future," agreed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
