Tesla looks to develop an electric Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, reigniting an old partnership
A recent tweet has reignited talks between Daimler and electric vehicle leader Tesla. Following founder Elon Musk’s recent comments regarding the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van, claiming it to be “a great van,” both parties are looking at releasing an electric version of the vehicle this year.
With talks underway, the move followed feedback from company technicians who utilise Sprinter vans at the business, but bemoaned its unsustainability and need to “burn fuel like crazy.” Through the partnership, Daimler will gain the ability to provide electric Sprinter vans later this year.

Tesla’s President of Automotive and a former Daimler executive, Jerome Guillen has been spearheading a series of talks between the two companies. Tesla previously supplied the electric powertrains for the first generation of electric smart cars and electric Mercedes-Benz B-Class, Electrek reports, but create further complexities now Daimler is set to launch its own version of the Sprinter.
However, joint projects and collaboration are becoming increasingly common in the automotive sector as demand for electric vehicles continues to rise. Shareholder, Zhejiang Geely Holding Co. is set to launch its premium electric cars in one of the world’s largest markets, China, which will create significant competition.
